By Californiapreps.com staff, June 7, 2007
The Pangos All American Camp at the USC Galen Center was the premiere event on the West Coast the first weekend in June, as players from all over the country came to the camp to showcase their skills in front of the various media and scouts at the event. Founded by Dinos Trigonis, the camp in its 5th year of existence is an exposure event for some of the top West Coast players and others from throughout the country to seen by a series of national and other well known scouts.
In our prior article we covered the class of 2008. Below are some of the California players who stood out from the classes of 2009 and 2010.
Class of 2009
Guards
Cameron Bell, 6-2 pg, Narbonne High School, Harbor City - Bell is a long and unorthodox combo guard who gets the job done on the court. He is very good at using his length to get to the basket and score against bigger players. While his shot is not consistent, it is good enough to keep opposing players honest. One of the things that Bell does well is play with a chip on his shoulder as he comes after whomever he is playing against on both ends of the court. He was not a well-known prospect coming into this camp, but his play was very impressive and colleges should take note of his name and his play.
Justin Cobbs, 6-2 pg, Bishop Montgomery, Torrance - Cobbs is a physical guard who knocked down jumper after jumper in one game, ran his team and made solid decisions with the ball. Very athletic, Cobbs is very effective in using his athleticism on the defensive end to lock up players. Cobbs is a football player who is giving up the sport this season to concentrate on basketball. With this, his game will improve and he will get better as a player. Various Pac 10, Big 12 and other schools across the country, are recruiting Cobbs.
Teandre Hubbard, 6-1 pg, Sacred Heart, San Francisco - This athletic point guard pushed the ball, found
his teammates for open scores and took what the defense game him, as he did not force the issue. We have seen
him play better but his game was hampered by a strained calf muscle, which affected his mobility. Despite
his injury he had a break out game against Brandon Jennings, as he hit jumper in his face, took him off
the dribble three times and played him tough. Schools within the Pac 10, Big East, Mountain West WAC and
WCC are tracking this player.

Xavier Thames
Xavier Thames, 6-3 pg, Pleasant Grove, Sacramento -Thames is a scoring point guard who is crafty with the ball, has a knock down shot and he makes things happen on the court. He was content to run his team and get everyone involved. He also picked his spots, as he slashed to the basket and he used his deceptive athleticism to get to the rim. Thames is a player who is garnering interest from various basketball programs in the Pac 10, Mountain West, Big 12 and ACC and this will continue as they see him play.
Wings
Hollis Thompson, 6-7 wing, Loyola High School, Los Angeles - Thompson is an athletic wing who is very skilled and has a good feel for the game. He is one of the fastest rising prospects on the West Coast, coming off a very good performance at the Arizona Cactus Classic. At the Pangos All American Camp, Thompson used his athleticism to get several dunks in transition. He used his long arms to deflect balls and play solid defense on other good wings at the camp. He also showed his expanding offensive skill set, knocking down jumpers off the catch and off the dribble. Thompson's game showed a lot of promise and various people at the camp took note of his ability. This was further heightened at the Top 20 All-Star game at the camp as he finished with 14 points and five rebounds in the game.
Jerry Brown, 6-6 wing, Sacred Heart Cathedral, San Francisco. - Brown's play was very strong and efficient, as he played under control and made the right play consistently. He rebounded the ball well and used his athleticism to run up and down the court and score on some power dunks in transition. He also knocked down the perimeter jumper if left open. His play was strong in almost every game and this continued onto the Top 44 all-star game at the camp, as he finished with 8 points, five rebounds and three assists in this game. Schools that are tracking his play include Pac 10, Big 12, Big Ten and Mountain West Schools, and this will continue throughout the summer as more schools see him play.
Jordan Mackie, 6-5 wing, Dorsey, Los Angeles - A late invitee, Mackie impressed with this game-changing athleticism, his ability to finish in traffic and his nice jump shot which he made on several occasions. Mackie is a player worth tracking down the road.
Rome Draper, 6-5 wing, Etiwanda High, Etiwanda - After a long lay-off, Draper made his first appearance on a basketball court in a long time. He looked a little bit rusty and out of shape, but he still has a very nice stroke and a jump shot that was very consistent along the perimeter. Draper also has a solid handle and he is a very good passer in the open court as he made several pinpoint passes to open teammates. Now with Draper coming back to the court, various schools will start recruiting the athletic wing.
Craig Payne, 6-5 wing, Etiwanda High, Etiwanda - Payne is a rugged wing who is very physical around the basket. While some may classify him as an undersized 4-man, Payne is very comfortable around the perimeter as he can knock down jumpers, take defenders off the dribble and make nice passes with the ball. He is very good on the defensive end and rebounding the ball and he is a wing worth watching the rest of the summer and next year.
Class of 2010
Guards
Gary Franklin Jr., 6-2 pg, Mater Dei, Santa Ana - Franklin is a big guard who is very promising prospect in the class of 2010. He knocked down jumpers, made pinpoint passes and played with a composure that is unlike a freshman. He is also a lock down defender who should start at the point guard spot for Division II California State Championship and perennial basketball power Mater Dei.
Deonta Burton, 6-1 pg, Cabrillo High School, Long Beach - Burton is an athletic combo guard who can shoot the lights out, get to the basket off the dribble and score. He's a young guard who looks very promising and Deonta Burton is a name worth remembering.
